CATCHALL
Well, hello. Much like Obsidian, Onyx was nothing like what I expected. It was cute and sexy. Unfortunately the rating isn't as high as what I gave Obsidian, but that doesn't mean that I didn't love it just as much. Onyx was full of suspension and love and was also hot and chilling both. I quite literally could not put it down! It absolutely captivated me, and my second journey through Katy's world was as thrilling as I remember the first one was.
THE HEROINE
KATY
It's impossible not to love Katy. She's absolutely a fun and realistic heroine. She has reactions to things, legitimate ones. While she doesn't just go along blindly to what everyone else says, she doesn't always push so hard that it's irritating. While she does make decisions that don't always turn out to be the right ones, we all do that. And though I thought that her reaction to something that happens at the end of the books is kind of weird and more than a little annoying, it wasn't that bad, relatively speaking. And because she's so awesome, I'm willing to cut her some slack.
THE LOVE INTEREST
DAEMON
Well, Daemon is a jerk. But I love him! He can be rude to Katy, but it's obvious that he really cares about her. And he's protective in the sweetest way, not in the creepy and overbearing way. He wants to keep Katy away form people who might hurt her, and he doesn't want her to have to get involved in alien matters too much. He doesn't smother her, though. Mostly, he lets her do what she wants to, unless he thinks that there is a really good reason why she shouldn't.
THE NEW KID
BLAKE
While that's a cliché, that is what he is, or at least at first. Who is Blake? To me it was clear from the beginning that he had some kind of agenda to follow, something to get done. I was kind of irritated that Katy couldn't see this, but I also don't blame her. I almost wish we'd gotten to know more about him. We always have choices, but sometimes those choices involve choosing the lesser or two evils.
THE PLOT
If I had to describe Onyx in one word, I'd say suspenseful. Because it is! I always was wanting to know what happened next. Even though I felt I could guess a lot of this book before it actually happened, which was a shame, I still really wanted to read it.
And it was seriously intense. Everything amps up in this second installment of the Lux series. The risks increase, and the corners get just a little darker. There's a new level of something that wasn't here before and I loved it.
The DOD comes to town in this one. And as it turns out, they know more than anyone ever though they did. And they're ruthless. They want what they want, and they've found a way they think they can get it. It's whole new level of creepiness and problems and interventions and such. It's awesome.
Another thing I loved about this book was the emotional depth. There was one particular thing that happened that made me cry so much. It was totally unexpected and very sobering because it made everything that much more serious.
I was just seriously having the absolute best time reading this book, because really, what's not to love? There's everything I could want. Suspense. Drama. Romance. And speaking of romance…
THE ROMANCE
The romance was full of as many steamy and sexy moments as there were sweet moments. It took me on a complete emotional ride and I loved the dynamic between Katy and Daemon. There's so much chemistry that the sparks literally fly right out of the page, and it was so much fun to read. I love that there was finally some real development between them and Jennifer didn't try to drag it out any longer than necessary. Im sure there will still be rocky roads, but at least the first part was done beautifully.
THE WRITING
I love Jennifer's writing. The voices of her characters are so genuine that I can really hear a unique and individual voice when I read them. Katy's voice is fun and cute but she can be serious when she needs to. And being inside her head is awesome because we can see all the crazy conflict that's going on. And I love the way that everything is told to us—like we're really there, and not just readers, but t still sounds like something Katy would say. Brill.
THE ENDING
The ending was awesome although it was a total cliffhanger. It left me wanting a lot more. Still, I feel that what I got in Onyx was a pretty good deal too! While unfortunately a lot of the ending felt obvious, there were still things that I could never have seen coming, twists I never expected. So despite the fact that I could pretty much see the ending right away, I still felt surprised enough that I didn't feel totally cheated.
WRAPUP
Filled to the brim with sweet and sexy romance, an intense and thrilling plot, and desperately gorgeous characters, Onyx was an unputdownable book of seriously epic proportions. And, um, I want a Daemon for myself, thanks. I wholeheartedly recommend Onyx and Obsidian! If you haven't started this series yet, you should—you really are missing out. Hot aliens everywhere! I truly enjoyed this book and will definitely nbe picking up Opal and the rest of the series.
